Association between specific diurnal preference questionnaire items and PER 3 VNTR genotype Jason

چکیده
Although significant intraindividual differences in self-reported diurnal preference, as measured by validated questionnaires, exist, the relative contribution of exogenous and endogenous factors to self-reported diurnal preference largely remains to be investigated. The present study examined which items from the Horne-Östberg (HÖ) questionnaire of diurnal preference were better at predicting genotypes in the variable number tandem polymorphism (VNTR) in the coding region of the gene PER3. This polymorphism has previously been reported to associate with diurnal preference, sleep parameters, and cognitive performance markers following sleep deprivation. Participants (n = 240, selected from a previously studied population) had completed the HÖ questionnaire and provided a DNA sample, which was genotyped with regard to the PER3 VNTR. A multinomial logistic regression showed that four items significantly increased prediction accuracy between the two homozygotic genotypes, with homozygotes for the longer variant of the gene (PER3) associated with answers indicating a stronger morning preference than those chosen by homozygotes for the shorter variant (PER3). Only one item, the question of whether the respondent required an alarm clock, discriminated between all three genotypes. Moreover, when the items were divided into those with the strongest genetic association and those with the weakest genetic, there was a significant relationship between age and the questions not predicting genotype, but not between age and genotype-predictive questions. This may explain previous findings regarding agerelated differences in self-reported diurnal preference. These findings could facilitate the future development of diurnal preference scales specifically tailored to the study of specific biological parameters.

Study of a Functional Polymorphism in the PER3 Gene and Diurnal Preference in a Colombian Sample
Polymorphisms in human clock genes have been evaluated as potential factors influencing circadian phenotypes in several populations. There are conflicting results for the association of a VNTR in the PER3 gene and diurnal preference in different studies. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between diurnal preference and daytime somnolence with the PER3 VNTR polymorphi...
متن کاملTitle and Running Title: Conscientiousness Predicts Diurnal Preference
The relationship between diurnal preference, as measured by the Horne-Östberg questionnaire, and quantifiable personality traits was investigated in 620 participants. A hierarchical multiple regression demonstrated that conscientiousness was the single biggest predictor of diurnal preference (beta = 0.26), after controlling for depression, sleep disorders, shift work, age, gender, and demograph...
متن کاملAssociation of STin2 VNTR Polymorphism in the SLC6A4 Gene with Increased Risk of MS Disease
Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that is characterized by inflammation, demyelination and axonal injury. Although the etiology of MS disease is still unknown, many studies suggest that immune system dysfunction plays an important role in the pathogenesis of this disease. The serotonin serves as a mediator between CNS and the immune sys...
متن کاملAssociation of the serotonin transporter gene with smoking behavior.
OBJECTIVE In an ongoing molecular genetic study of temperament, participants were genotyped to examine the association of smoking with two polymorphisms of the serotonin transporter gene (SERT): the promoter region, 5-HTTLPR, and an intronic variable-number-of-tandem-repeats region (VNTR). METHOD Full information was available for 330 families, and 244 "ever smokers" were identified (54 past ...
متن کاملPolymorphisms in the circadian expressed genes PER3 and ARNTL2 are associated with diurnal preference and GNβ3 with sleep measures
Sleep and circadian rhythms are intrinsically linked, with several sleep traits, including sleep timing and duration, influenced by both sleep homeostasis and the circadian phase. Genetic variation in several circadian genes has been associated with diurnal preference (preference in timing of sleep), although there has been limited research on whether they are associated with other sleep measur...
